Who We Are

Being told who we are meant to be /

Take back the narrative of self-identity

Indigenous Art Program 2020

Objective

A ‘westernised’ approach to defining who we are can block real connections with our identities. Assumptions about race and identity inadvertently hijack personal exploration into family and cultural history and reinforce myths and prejudices. This large-scale public art project aimed to directly challenge these issues.

Narrative

My journey with looking into my own identity is constantly changing and evolving. Looking back at history within my family and culture, a recurring theme of kinship connections have been a big part of establishing who I am and where I’ve come from. I was inspired by a combination of culture, kinship and community in creating the story behind this piece for Brisbane City Council’s Indigenous Art Program 2020.
